TecSalud moved beyond borders through Héctor Ramón Martínez’s participation in the 18th Cell Transplant and Regenerative Medicine Society International Congress.
During the congress held in Japan, the neurology specialist shared the Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery’sexperience in a line of research developed over several years.
It focuses on autologous stem cell transplantation in patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), an approach which is considered a regenerative treatment.
“It’s a procedure in which we use the patient’s own stem cells to protect their motor neurons and control the progression of the disease,” the doctor stated during his presentation.
Martínez, who is also director of the TecSalud Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery, added that sharing his knowledge with the global medical community represented a new hope for patients with the disease.
“We have succeeded in extending the life expectancy of patients with ALS".

Innovation that provides hope
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is a neurodegenerative disease that affects the motor neurons of the brain and spinal cord, which are responsible for controlling movement.
Thus, Héctor Ramón Martínez’s research on stem cell transplantation in ALS patients marks a significant advance in treatment of the disease.
“We discovered that when applying a drug which stimulates the bone marrow, it produced a massive subpopulation of progenitor stem cells capable of transforming into motor neurons,” he explained.
Based on this finding, the specialist developed a method by which to obtain these cells using the patient’s blood.

“We separated the progenitor cells from the blood taken and incubated them with an antibody associated with magnetic particles,” he explained.
“Then they were passed through a laboratory magnetic system, which allowed us to extract the isolated cells, and to finally inject them into the motor cortex of the brain,” he added.
As a result of this procedure, Héctor Ramón and his research team were able to improve the quality of life and stabilize the progression of the disease in patients with ALS.

A model that is transforming lives
Another great achievement presented during the congress was the creation of the ALS Clinic, located at the Zambrano Hellion Hospital.
“We serve patients from all over Latin America, and this is possible thanks to the dedication and deep commitment of our team and the institution,” he said.
The doctor highlighted that the clinic brings together a multidisciplinary team of specialists and support staff, all committed to providing comprehensive and deeply humane care.

“On average, patients live for another 29.1 months after diagnosis; however, we have managed to extend that to 54 months at the ALS Clinic,” stated Héctor Ramón.
The clinic also promotes a blood donation program which analyzes DNA to study hereditary ALS in Mexico.
“This effort not only helps patients, but also contributes to the development of the country, and reflects the institution’s commitment to the health of the population and to Mexico,” the doctor said.

The research presented by Héctor Ramón Martínez reflects how the combination of innovation, scientific rigor, and human compassion can provide new alternatives for patients suffering from complex diseases such as ALS.
Additionally, participation in international forums promotes the global exchange of knowledge and opens the door to strategic partnerships that improve medical practice.
“Thanks to this, TecSalud continues to move towards becoming a benchmark for advanced healthcare, all with the aim of providing patients with a better life,” concluded Dr. Héctor Ramón.
