TecSalud is incorporating Focused Ultrasound technology at the Zambrano Hellion Hospital for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease, making it the first academic health center in the country to offer this minimally invasive therapy to patients with this neurological disease.

According to Dr. Héctor Ramón Martínez, Director of the Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery at TecSalud, 360,000 people in Mexico are living with Parkinson’s disease, a condition that affects more than just mobility, but also autonomy, social connections, and the emotional wellbeing of those suffering from it.

The new therapy uses sound waves pinpointed to specific areas of the brain to reduce symptoms such as tremors, and it has been added to other options on offer by the TecSalud Center for Parkinson’s, such as Deep Brain Stimulation.

Experts have emphasized that it’s a comprehensive treatment, since it considers both the physical symptoms of the disease as well as the emotional and social impact, areas that often remain invisible.

During the presentation, a patient shared his testimony about how Focused Ultrasound transformed his quality of life, reinforcing TecSalud’s vision of integrating technological innovation with a human-centered, specialized care model.

Beyond physical symptoms

Involuntary tremors, loss of balance, and muscle rigidity are just some of the symptoms that are part of the daily lives of people with Parkinson’s.

These symptoms make it progressively more difficult to perform everyday and seemingly simple activities, such as writing, eating, or even leaving the house without help,” said Dr. Héctor Martínez.

The expert added that, while physical deterioration is evident, the emotional toll is equally important and is often overlooked.

Many patients face anxiety, depression, and even social isolation due to the loss of independence and the fear of being judged,” he explained.

For this reason, TecSalud’s consolidated approach for Parkinson’s treatment is comprehensive, considering both the physical aspects of the disease and also its emotional and social dimensions.

Therapeutic innovation at the service of patients

With over 10 years in operation, the Center for Parkinson’s, part of the Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery at TecSalud, has used various therapies for managing the disease, including Deep Brain Stimulation.

However, there are therapeutic alternatives that can make a significant difference to our patients that we had not yet explored,” shared Héctor Ramón.

Such is the case of the most recent addition to the Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery: Focused Ultrasound.

A minimally invasive therapy which, via sound waves pinpointed to specific areas of the brain, can significantly reduce Parkinson’s symptoms such as tremors.

Regarding this, Dr. Guillermo Torre, Rector of TecSalud, said that “This addition is part of the institution’s commitment to advanced healthcare".

Thus, TecSalud is consolidating its position as the first academic health center in Mexico to offer this treatment to Parkinson’s patients.

A testimony of hope

During the Focused Ultrasound presentation ceremony, the testimony of a patient from the United States, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s at age 42, was shared.

I was living a normal life, but after the diagnosis, my life, as well as my family and social environment, fell apart,” he recalled.

He said that his breaking point came during his son’s birthday party, when his son had to apologize to his guests for his father’s behavior.

That’s when I decided to look for an alternative that would really make a difference to my disease and I learned about Focused Ultrasound,” he said.

It transformed my health, my relationship with my family, and with the world. I’ve now regained my confidence, self-esteem, and independence,” he added enthusiastically.

For TecSalud, Focused Ultrasound represents a technological advance, as well as the answer to a clear mission: putting innovation at the service of people.

The goal is to offer tools and care models that support patients from diagnosis to treatment and continuous follow-up,” said Dr. Héctor Ramón Martínez.

With this addition, TecSalud and its Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery are consolidating their position as advanced healthcare promoters, setting the standard for the future of medicine in Mexico.

Technology is important, but the key is knowing how to integrate it into a highly human-centered, specialized care model,” concluded Dr. Guillermo Torre.
